The Bulgarian Language: Being Understood - 15 June, 2011
Whether you are going to buy or sell a property in Bulgaria, it is important to know a bit about the language before you start dealing with real estate in Bulgaria.

If you are a buying a property in Bulgaria, you will want to have a good grasp of the language so that you can understand the different terms relating to your property and be able to know what type of documents you are signing. Also, when you move into your real estate in Bulgaria, having a basic understanding of Bulgarian will help you communicate with your new neighbours and have an easier time becoming part of the community. If you are planning on relocating permanently to Bulgaria, you should speak at least a small amount of the language and also have some grasp of written Bulgarian.

If you are looking to sell property in Bulgaria, knowing the language will help you interpret unfamiliar words to potential English speaking buyers as well as market the property in Bulgaria to the locals as well.

Most Bulgarians Don’t Speak English
When making your way around Bulgaria, you will find that most police officers, public transport workers, service staff, and members of the general public do not understand English. To make things even more confusing, shaking your head from side to side means “yes” and nodding means “no”! This is why a basic understanding of the Bulgarian language is essential.

The Bulgarian Alphabet
The Bulgarian language bears very little resemblance to our alphabet, as it uses the Cyrillic alphabet. However, it is possible to memorize the sounds of each letter so that you can read signs out loud and read from an English-Bulgarian dictionary to make yourself understood.

Ways to Learn

There are many ways that you can learn Bulgarian before moving to your property in Bulgaria.  Here are a few of the more popular methods:
•    Bulgarian Language classes: These might be offered by your local community centre or school, and are a great way to practice your conversational skills in a group environment.
•    Language Learning CDs: These can be great for learning on your own, and you can listen to them while driving, cleaning, running, or anytime.
•    Reading Bulgarian newspapers: Get your hands on a few local publications to practice deciphering the confusing Cyrillic alphabet.
•    Interactive CD ROMs: There are many forms of language learning software out there that teach through games, quizzes, and other fun methods.
•    Speaking with a native Bulgarian: This is the best way to practice your conversation skills and refine your spoken Bulgarian.

Learning a new language can be challenging, but be patient. The more you learn the easier and more fun the experience of living in Bulgaria will be!

When moving to a new property in Bulgaria, it is a good idea to learn the basics of the language so that you can make yourself understood.
